Experimental Assessment of Aero-Propulsive Effects on a Large Turboprop Aircraft with Rear-Engine Installation

This paper deals with the estimation of propulsive effects for a three-lifting surface turboprop aircraft concept, rear engine installation at horizontal tail tips, conceived to carry up 130 passengers. work is focused on how system affects tailplane aerodynamics and, consequently, aircraft’s static stability characteristics using wind tunnel tests. Both direct and indirect have been estimated. The former produces moments whose values depend distance from centre gravity thrust lines propeller disks. latter entails change in angle attack an increment dynamic pressure tailplane. Several tests were also performed body-empennage configuration investigate without appearance any aerodynamic interference phenomena, especially canard. output experimental campaign reveals beneficial effect longitudinal stability, increase margin about 2.5% reduction directional derivative 4%, attributed different induced drag contributions two semi-planes. Moreover, rolling moment coefficient experiences greater variation due propulsion depending rotation direction. outcomes this allow enhancement technical readiness level considered aircraft, giving clear indications feasibility configuration.
